Photos and local journal data
With your permission, 8BitsTripLog reads the dates, identifiers, and embedded locations of photos in the range you choose. It stores journal structure, titles, notes, comments, manual events, place choices, photo references, and editing decisions.
TripLog does not make duplicate copies of source photos. Photo pixels remain in Apple Photos. A bundled read-only Sample Journey remains available without Photos access.
Optional place knowledge
On-Device Only uses photo dates and local GPS clustering without sending trip coordinates for place or weather lookups.
Apple Places sends a representative coordinate to Apple to request city and point-of-interest names. Enriched additionally sends a representative place coordinate to the English Wikipedia API for established names, factual excerpts, and source links. Wikipedia can receive the request IP address and coordinate under Wikimedia’s policies.
Photo pixels, personal notes, manual events, and the complete trip route are not sent through these place features.
Historical Weather
Historical Weather is off until you enable it. For supported dates, the app sends Apple Weather a coordinate rounded to two decimal places and a past date range. Weather responses are cached locally and are not written into the synchronized trip journal.
Optional iCloud
Sync App Preferences and Sync Trips are independent. Preference sync stores selected settings in your private iCloud key-value store. Trip sync stores journal records and universal Photos references in your private iCloud account.
Photo pixels continue to use your existing iCloud Photos library; TripLog does not copy them into the journal.
Diagnostics
The app keeps a bounded local diagnostic log with build identity, named app events, and sanitized counters. It is designed not to contain photo, note, or journal bodies. Diagnostics leave the device only when you deliberately copy and share them.
Tracking, advertising, and sales
8BitsTripLog contains no advertising or tracking SDKs, does not track activity across other companies’ apps or websites, and does not sell personal information. 8BitsForge does not operate an account or journal server for the app.
Retention and deletion
Local trips remain until you delete them or remove the app. Deleting a trip removes the journal record, not its source photos. Downloaded Wikipedia context remains until enrichment is removed or its trip is deleted. Cached weather remains until you clear it or remove the app.
Turning off synchronization stops future sync on that device; it does not by itself delete data already held in iCloud.
Service providers and licences
Apple provides Photos, Maps and Places, WeatherKit, and optional iCloud synchronization. Wikimedia provides English Wikipedia excerpts. Weather displays include Apple’s required mark and legal-source link. Wikipedia excerpts identify their source, contributors, CC BY-SA licence, retrieval date, and display modification.
